Jewish Family Service LA Launches 2022 JFS Voter Engagement Project
Earlier this month, Jewish Family Service LA launched its 2022 Voter Engagement Project in advance of the upcoming June 7th primary election. The goal of the project is to increase voter registration and participation among eligible clients, staff, and volunteers.
JFS believes voter engagement is a critical part of our work. It not only empowers the people and the communities we serve, but also helps us further our mission. Many JFS services depend on city, county, and state funding, and those services are critical to the wellbeing of individuals and families throughout Los Angeles. When members of our community vote, they are helping to protect the services that keep our city strong. Additionally, JFS is uniquely equipped to reach those least likely to be contacted by third-party civic engagement efforts.
It is important to recognize that voting supports the interests of those who cannot always speak up for themselves, like children and older adults. JFS wants to encourage our volunteers, staff, and clients to advocate for themselves and their community. Some of the best ways to do that are to register to vote and become educated and engaged voters.
“Nonprofits play an important role in fostering voter participation among groups that have traditionally been less likely to vote,” said Nancy Volpert, JFS Senior Director of Public Policy & Community Engagement. “As an organization that directly serves low-propensity populations, JFS has the ability to engage and educate our staff, clients, and volunteers about the impact their vote can have. Our past efforts have shown that our community views us as a trusted nonpartisan resource that can truly be relied on and we’re proud to continue this work.”
The JFS Voter Engagement Project will provide voter engagement materials, informational sessions for staff and clients at JFS locations, reminders about voter registration, voting deadlines, and links to non-partisan resources, and other resources leading up to June 7th. In addition, JFS will be partnering with the LA County Registrar-Recorder’s office to host one-day Flex Voting sites at the JFS SOVA Community Food and Resource Program pantries and the JFS Valley Storefront Community Resource Center to make it easier for clients and others to vote.
“Voting matters, voting empowers people and helps support and further our mission. We want to use our platform to engage members of our LA community and help them become educated voters. The JFS Voter Engagement Project focuses on demystifying the election process so that more of our JFS community members will participate,” said JFS Board Member and Chair of the Public Policy Committee, Tami Kagan-Abrams.
The JFS Voter Engagement Project is led by Tami Kagan-Abrams, Nancy Volpert, and Public Policy team member Davina Cohanghadosh.
