October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence, or Intimate Partner Violence, affects more than 12 million Americans every year. Over 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the U.S. have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner.
What Is Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence is a pattern of abusive behavior that occurs between intimate partners to gain power or control. It can take the form of physical, sexual, psychological, or economic abuse. Domestic Violence can happen to anyone anywhere, no matter their gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, or economic status. For women and children, Domestic Violence is a leading cause of homelessness. Because of LA’s affordable housing shortage, many people experiencing abuse at home choose to remain in their relationships rather than face homelessness.
