Volunteer Spotlight

Every Friday at the Jona Goldrich Multipurpose Center’s gym, JFSLA volunteer Lee Lahmy empowers seniors to stay active by sharing her fitness expertise and inspiring them with her optimistic outlook on life.

Fitness has always been integral to Lahmy’s life and is what led her to JFSLA. When she learned that a friend was volunteering with JFSLA, she felt inspired to share her skills. Lahmy reached out to Joyce Williams, JFSLA’s Director of Volunteers and Training, who recommended the gym attendant position at the Jona Goldrich Multipurpose Center. As a gym attendant, Lahmy helps seniors use gym equipment safely, offers modifications for their exercises, and encourages those who may feel discouraged by their limitations. She’s a strong advocate for moving your body any way possible and emphasizes how important physical activity is for longevity. Clients look forward to Fridays with Lahmy, knowing they will receive the support and motivation they need to excel in their workouts.

“Lee’s warm and welcoming energy makes everyone feel at home,” said Danny Vasquez, Activity Coordinator at the Jona Goldrich Multipurpose Center. “She consistently motivates and encourages the seniors to stay active and challenge themselves a bit more each time.”

Volunteering brings Lahmy personal satisfaction and a sense of belonging. She treasures genuine interactions with clients and values JFSLA most for its inclusive nature, serving individuals of all backgrounds, and providing seniors with a safe, welcoming environment filled with diverse activities and services. Every Friday after the gym closes, Lahmy stays to help set up for the center’s Shabbat festivities.

“For seniors to gather, share, and feel a sense of belonging at JFSLA is a big blessing, especially for those like me whose families live far away,” said Lahmy. “I feel at home.”

In addition to volunteering with JFSLA, Lahmy also motivates children as a part-time Hebrew and Judaic Studies teacher at Pressman Academy. It’s no surprise that beyond her work and responsibilities, Lahmy’s favorite activity is dancing, staying active, and traveling.

“Anyone looking to volunteer should choose something they truly enjoy, whether it’s cooking, serving, or cleaning. When you do what you love, time flies, and everyone benefits,” said Lahmy. “It’s like becoming part of a family, contributing to your community, and strengthening that sense of belonging for everyone involved.”
