Jewish Family Service LA is California’s Nonprofit of the Year

Jewish Family Service LA (JFSLA), the leading Jewish social services agency in Los Angeles, has been honored as a 2024 California Nonprofit of the Year for the second consecutive year. The recognition comes from California Assemblymember Isaac Bryan of District 55, highlighting JFSLA’s impactful contributions to the Los Angeles community.
JFSLA offers an extensive network of resources addressing critical issues such as mental health care, food insecurity, services for older adults, and domestic violence. It is one of over 100 nonprofits celebrated by their state senators and assemblymembers for their outstanding work.
“We are incredibly honored to be recognized as a 2024 Nonprofit of the Year by Assemblymember Bryan,” said Eli Veitzer, President and CEO of JFSLA. “This award is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our staff and volunteers who work to uplift our clients and create a more compassionate Los Angeles.”
Geoff Green, CEO of the California Association of Nonprofits (CalNonprofits), a partner in this initiative, emphasized the vital role of nonprofits in the state. “Nonprofit organizations touch the lives of millions of Californians in ways that can often go unrecognized. From the childcare program to the soccer team, from the art class to the health clinic, and from the community organizer to the animal shelter — nonprofits improve the lives of all Californians and make our communities stronger. Nonprofits are also a key economic driver in our state, accounting for 1 in 14 jobs. It’s important to recognize all they do.”
The significance of the nonprofit sector is underscored by the “Causes Count” report commissioned by CalNonprofits in 2019. According to the report, the nonprofit sector is the fourth largest industry in California, employing over 1.2 million people. Annually, California nonprofits generate more than $273 billion in revenue and attract $40 billion from outside the state. The unpaid labor contributed by volunteers at nonprofits is equivalent to 330,000 full-time jobs each year.
Now in its ninth year, the California Nonprofit of the Year initiative allows each state legislator to acknowledge a nonprofit organization excelling in their district. The program is sponsored by CalNonprofits in collaboration with the state Senate and Assembly Select Committees on the Nonprofit Sector. CalNonprofits, the leading policy voice for California’s nonprofit sector, focuses on advocacy, education, and research to build a more powerful and politically engaged nonprofit network across the state.
